A starting price answers a narrow question
The directory displays an approximate starting item amount from a saved catalog record. A range can cover different options, and the cheapest option may not be the size, colour or included set you want. Opening a listing is the point to establish the price of your exact selection.
This distinction matters when using an under-$30 filter. A listing can qualify because its starting estimate is below $30 while your chosen variant is above that amount. The filter has described the recorded starting amount accurately; it has not quoted every option.
Work through the same-variant comparison
Consider two hypothetical hoodies. Listing A starts at $22, but the size and colour you want are $31. Listing B starts at $28 and your selected option is also $28. For those selected options, B has the lower item amount despite its higher starting figure.
The next comparison still needs the same included items and a complete quote. The figures below are examples, not live offers, and they do not establish a delivered total.
| Illustrative listing | Starting amount | Selected option | What you compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | $22 | $31 | The $31 option you actually want |
| B | $28 | $28 | The $28 option you actually want |
Check what the price actually includes
Confirm whether a photo shows a set while the option covers one piece, whether an accessory is included, and whether the displayed amount applies to the selected size. Record quantities consistently. A photograph containing two items is not proof that both are included.
When comparing similar products, preserve the listing URL and option name. If an option changes while you are researching, update the comparison instead of silently carrying the earlier amount forward.
Keep unknown costs visible
Use separate fields for the selected item amount, domestic delivery, packing, international delivery and other applicable charges. An unavailable amount stays unknown. This stops an incomplete total from looking cheaper simply because it contains fewer known fields.
For the shipping portion, compare actual packing arrangements and current service quotes. Product dimensions and a community post’s shipping cost cannot replace the quote for your own order.
Make a decision around the requirement
Return to the reason you shortlisted the item: the fit, role, construction detail or useful evidence it supplies. The lowest selected price matters only after the candidates meet the requirement you are comparing.
If the correct variant breaks your budget, narrow the shortlist or change the requirement explicitly. Keeping the wrong variant solely to preserve a low reference price produces an unusable comparison.
Use the step-by-step checklist
Record the current chosen variant and the other costs in your budget.
